Dear john,

My Federal Prison Oversight Act is now law. This week, President Biden signed H.R. 3019, legislation to establish new, independent oversight of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. I am grateful to President Biden and for the partnership of Congressman Armstrong and Senators Ossoff, Durbin, and Braun. Our bipartisan effort is proof of what is possible when Democrats and Republicans work together to deliver common-sense solutions. To learn more about this new law, read this press release from my office.

This week, we also took another step in supporting the rights of victims of crime. On Monday night, the Victims’ Voices Outside and Inside the Courtroom Effectiveness (Victims’ VOICES) Act passed the House and now heads to the President’s desk. This bill will ensure family members, legal guardians, and those appointed by the court who act on behalf of a victim during certain criminal court case proceedings receive restitution from convicted defendants for costs like transportation, lost income, and child care that they incur. I am proud to be an original cosponsor of this legislation and look forward to the President signing this bill as well.

Last weekend, the House of Representatives lost a powerful voice and a devoted champion for progress. My heart is still grieving the loss of our friend and colleague, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas. While her voice can never be replaced, I am humbled and privileged by the responsibility I now have to lead as the top Democratic member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime. I came to Congress to end gun violence. Let's continue our work.
