Improving Education in Indiana

With students across Indiana preparing to return to school, Hoosiers should be aware of several new laws now in effect aimed at improving education throughout the state.

Why it matters: Providing a quality education for Hoosier students is vital in preparing students – and our state – for the future. 

New education laws I supported this year include: 

A new law to identify struggling readers and provide early intervention to improve students’ basic reading skills;
A law requiring schools to adopt policies that limit students from using cellphones and other devices during class time; and
A law that requires schools to establish a truancy prevention policy to ensure kids are in school and learning.

As your state senator, I will continue supporting policies that ensure our students are ready to learn and be successful.

Programs and Grants for Local Government

Districts across Indiana can utilize state-funded grants and other programs to maintain and improve their communities. Highlighted below is one of many grants and programs offered or administered by the state of Indiana.

Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) - Community Corrections and Justice Reinvestment Grant

This program encourages counties to develop a coordinated local corrections-criminal justice system and provide effective alternatives to imprisonment at the state level.

Grants may be used for the establishment and operation of community corrections programs and problem-solving courts as well as additional funding for probation departments, pre-trial services programs, prosecutor's diversion programs and jail treatment programs.

Good Luck Hoosier Olympians

The 2024 Paris Olympics begin today, and Indiana will be well represented on Team USA.

This year's team includes many Hoosiers and athletes with Indiana connections who are participating in a wide variety of competitions.

Congratulations to our Hoosier athletes for earning this great honor, and good luck as you represent Indiana on the world stage!
