Dear John,
The Supreme Court just overturned a 1984 decision known as Chevron. Chevron has instructed lower courts to defer to federal agencies when laws passed by Congress are not clear or detailed enough to interpret.
Federal agencies have long stood to be the experts in each field, identifying the blanks in bills written by Congress. The courts do not have this kind of expertise.
This disastrous decision could lead to courts blocking fundamental rules and regulations on civil rights, the environment, food safety, and more.
Sign the petition to denounce the Supreme Court’s attack on federal agencies.
Every single regulation could now be opened to legal challenges if judges are allowed to discount or disregard the expertise of the agency that put the regulations into place. Repealing Chevron has been a right-wing dream for years. This decision is a power grab by the courts.
