WG Economy: The Case For Israel

WG Economy | David Winston

July 24, 2024

Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed Congress today to make his case for continued support in the war on Hamas. His visit comes as five US citizens have been held hostage for over nine months. The United States has a history of bipartisan support for Israel, but foreign policy is in the midst of a rethink in both parties. In a recent survey for Winning the Issues, we looked at foreign policy in the lead-up to the Prime Minister's visit.

On the question about whether assistance to Israel is in our security interests, about 1 in 2 said yes (48% yes, 29% no, 22% don't know.) The percentages were higher among Republicans (59% yes) and especially conservative Republicans (65% yes). But among independents and Democrats, the percentages saying Israel is in our security interests were less than 50% (independence, 44%; Democrats, 41%). .

WG Discussion Points: Trump Picks A Rust Belt

Running Mate

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

July 19, 2024

President Trump's selection of Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate is a clear indication that he's going all in on recreating his 2016 Rust Belt coalition. Comparing 2012 to 2016 election results, the movement of blue collar, working class voters was key to Trump's success in the 2016 election. These groups included union households, those making $50,000 or less, voters with an associated degree or had attended some college, and those that had a high school diploma or less.

Based on 2016 Edison Research exit polls, among union households that Romney lost by 18, Trump cut that margin in half and lost by only 9. Among those making under $50,000 a year, the margin went from -22 to -12. The margin for those who had an associates degree or attended some college went from -1 to +8. Finally, among those that had a high school diploma or less, the margin went from -6 to +5. The obvious item to note about these groups is that they are potentially new additions to the Republican Party.

On Thursday, Chairman Avella and Mark Penn, Stagwell CEO and former Clinton advisor joined Fox News Channel's Harris Faulkner on The Faulkner Focus to discuss President Biden's speech to the nation about bowing out of his bid for reelection.
