Man charged with attempted assassination of pro-life Justice Brett Kavanaugh to stand trial
The man charged with plotting to assassinate pro-life US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is due to stand trial after Federal prosecutors said that they have not reached a pretrial agreement with Nicholas John Roske’s defence team.
In 2022, Roske travelled from California to Maryland with the intent to kill Justice Kavanaugh. When arrested near the justice’s home, the then 26-year old was carrying a Glock 17 pistol, several rounds of ammunition, a knife, zip ties, pepper spray and duct tape.
He told police he intended to kill Justice Kavanaugh as he was upset with the contents of the leaked draft Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson abortion case, the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, making it possible for pro-life laws to be passed at state level in the US for the first time since 1973.
The attempted assassination of a Supreme Court Justice is obviously an extremely serious matter and is receiving fitting coverage in the US. Two years on from the plot to kill Justice Kavanaugh, however, RTÉ News still hasn’t reported on the incident. It will be interesting to see if they cover the upcoming trial when it begins.
