Hey John,
About one year ago, a little-known Mayor from South Bend, Indiana took the stage at our National Champagne Brunch. He told his coming out story, bringing the room to tears. And yes, this is the speech where he confronted Mike Pence over his bigoted religious ideology – sparking national media attention.
If you haven’t seen Pete Buttigieg’s speech from our National Champagne Brunch last year, do so now. Or watch it again for a wonderful #ThrowbackThursday!

Pete talked about how difficult it was to come out of the closet and live his truth, but that it was even harder to live a life filled with fear. He described how his younger self – not knowing that better things were to come – would have cut out the part of him that made him gay. How glad he was that he never found a knife to do that terrible job, because without it he never would have found Chasten, the love of his life.
I was so proud watching Pete tell this phenomenal story last year. It speaks to what every LGBTQ person must reckon with when coming out. I often think of how many of our candidates must tell their story over and over and over to new voters, risking rejection each time. Running as an openly LGBTQ person is breathtakingly brave. Show them you support their bravery and their campaigns – chip in to support Victory Fund today.
When Pete ran for President, he shattered barriers. He proved that an LGBTQ person CAN win Iowa and be a major contender for President. He told his coming out story from the Democratic debate stage, showing millions of LGBTQ youth that it’s okay to be yourself. He inspired a new group of LGBTQ candidates, many of them Victory Fund candidates now, to run for office.
While Pete’s no longer in the running, we still have an amazing crop of candidates that need your help. Donate now for more celebrations – and more historic moments on Election Day.
Thank you again for standing with us.

LGBTQ Victory Fund has helped thousands of openly LGBTQ candidates win elections up and down the ballot, from sea to shining sea since our founding in 1991. We believe representation is power – so we elected U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin and Kyrsten Sinema, Governors Jared Polis and Kate Brown, all seven LGBTQ members of U.S. Congress and countless candidates for state and local government, including Virginia Delegate Danica Roem, Colorado state Representative Leslie Herod and Pennsylvania Assemblymember Brian Sims. And with an unprecedented number of LGBTQ people running for office in this year, we’ll need your support to make 2020 the next Rainbow Wave.
