Government of Canada
The Government of Canada has recently announced financial support for post-secondary students, as well as updated the timeline for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, which will go live Monday, April 27th.
For post-secondary students:
- Students will be eligible for $1,250 a month from May through August. That sum can go up to $1,750 if the student is taking care of someone or has a disability.
- The benefit is available also to students who have jobs but are making less than $1,000 a month.
students who volunteer over the summer will be paid between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on the hours they work. - Payments will be made through the Canada Revenue Agency.
For the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy:
- The subsidy generally covers 75% of an employee's wages — up to $847 per week — for employers of all sizes and across all sectors who have suffered a drop in gross revenues of at least 15% in March and 30% in April and May.
- The program will be in place for a 12-week period, from March 15 to June 6, 2020.

CHBA BC
CHBA BC would like to send out a #CheersToVolunteers to all of our member volunteers for #NVW2020! With it being National Volunteer Week, we want to share our Association Awards handed out in early March to recognize the following volunteers for their hard work and support last year, and the local offices that support them.
Member Award Winners:
1. Service Award
This person has given his time at the local level as president, and then on the executive of CHBA BC as well as serving as a committee chair. After serving on the executive committee since 2016, this member has proven to be a real leader in the industry and association helping to navigate through some very important issues. He never failed to step up when called upon and was always accessible. His term has now finished on the executive. The recipient of the CHBA BC Service Award to Matt McCurrach.
2. CHBA BC Member of the Year
The prestigious CHBA BC Member of the Year is presented annually to a member in recognition of his/her dedication and service to the Association at the provincial level. The Award recognizes the member’s effort to promote the mission and vision of the Association provincially. Each year CHBA BC recognizes members who have made significant contributions to the housing industry and to our Provincial association. The recipient of the CHBA BC Member of the Year is Mark Bernhardt.
3. New Member Recruitment (Highest number of new members to the Association in 2019)
This is a significant award and could easily be called the best salesperson award. It should be noted that there were a number of membership increases throughout the province and each year, we ask the local to provide their membership numbers as of the end of December 31 so we can keep consistency. The local association with the greatest number of new members to the association Kerriann Coady with CHBA Vancouver Island.
4. Local Association of the Year Award
Local Home Builders’ associations strive to provide membership value, achieve an environment in which members can operate profitably while working to mitigate the effects of regulations, while ensuring safety, and to promote choice in housing for homebuyers.
The Local Association of the Year Award is presented to the Local HBA that has been considered to have made the greatest progress and achievement over the previous year in implementing an agenda of services and activities for members and support of the provincial association and its programs. We are very pleased to announce that the Local Home Building Association of the Year Award is presented to CHBA Central Interior.
5. Executive Officer of the Year Award
At CHBA BC, we have a collaborative and hard-working group of Executive Officers. They work each day to ensure their local association keeps moving forward and members are engaged. They organize seminars, dinner events, award programs and ensure members keep paying them which is the most important part of their job!
The Executive Officer of the Year Award recognizes the highest level of dedication, professionalism, and competence in organization management, as shown by Executive Officers at the local level of the Association. Each entry has been nominated or endorsed by the president of the local association. This category was judged by their CHBA peers outside of the province. We are pleased to announce that the Executive Officer of the Year Kerriann Coady.

Here are some additional industry updates due to COVID that may be relevant to your business. The state of emergency in BC has been extended to April 28, 2020.
