And I know I’m not alone. More than one million people contributed a record-breaking $100 million in the first 48 hours after Vice President Kamala Harris announced she would be stepping up to run following President Biden’s decision to leave the race.
This incredible burst of energy is so encouraging!
Here in Wisconsin, in addition to great climate champions at the top of the ticket, we have such exciting opportunities down ballot as well. Because we defeated the gerrymander, we can win a pro-climate action, pro-clean water, pro-democracy majority in our state assembly this fall. We can shift the balance of power. We can return to bipartisan cooperation on broadly popular conservation priorities in our state legislature.

Yee Leng Xiong for Assembly District 85
Yee Leng Xiong is running to represent the new, more competitive AD 85 (Wausau area), which is now the tipping-point seat to win a pro-conservation majority in the assembly. The 85th's incumbent holds an abysmal 7 percent lifetime rating in our Conservation Scorecard. Yee Leng Xiong, by contrast, says addressing PFAS contamination and releasing the $125 million in PFAS remediation funding is one of his top conservation priorities. He’s also a strong supporter of Wisconsin’s Clean Energy Plan.

LuAnn Bird for Assembly District 61
LuAnn Bird is running to represent the highly competitive AD 61 west of Milwaukee. Now retired, she brings a lifetime of leadership experience, including serving as the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin. If elected, she will work for environmental protections and she will be a dedicated advocate for protecting voting rights and getting rid of hurdles that make it difficult for disabled Wisconsinites to cast their ballots.

Angela Stroud for Assembly District 73
Up north, Angela Stroud is running to represent the new 73rd district. If she wins her primary on Aug. 13, she’ll be highly favored to win the general election under the new maps.
“Protecting Lake Superior is the top issue in my campaign, because if the people of the 73rd Assembly District don’t protect the lake, who will?” she says.
The incumbents of the old 73rd and 74th districts certainly didn’t – they earned scores of just 20 and 10 percent respectively in our Conservation Scorecard. Angela Stroud supports robust measures to protect Wisconsin’s water from PFAS, oil pipelines, CAFOs and other sources of pollution, as well as long-term funding for the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund.
