Dear Friend,
Earlier this year, Kitchener’s artists reached out to Green MP Mike Morrice regarding the lack of federal funding for arts & culture in the region.
So Mike’s team got to work, crunched the numbers, and found massive inequalities.
While the three highest funded regions receive an average of $18.30 in federal arts funding per person, Waterloo Region receives only $3.39 per person - a gap that amounted to over $9 million in 2022 alone!
And a similar story is playing out all across the country. For example, Edmonton receives just $5.56 per person, Malpeque receives a mere $3.28 per person, and Sarnia-Lambton receives nothing at all!
Mike started advocating directly to the Minister of Heritage for this funding gap to be addressed, including sending her a letter back in March. He also met with the CEO of the Canada Council for the Arts, hosted a roundtable with local artists, and continued his calls in Parliament.
In June, he submitted a motion calling on the government to create a fairer system for all, where artists and creatives in communities across the country can thrive, by:
- restoring federal arts funding to 2021 levels,
- and redistributing this more equitably by applying the Regional Development Model to the Canada Council for the Arts.
