John, we wanted to bring you one family's story today. We talk a lot about the sheer amount of people in need around the world, and it can be difficult to imagine how just one donor can make a difference.

Almas is a mother facing incredible hardship in Sudan. Her baby, Hermon (pictured below), was suffering from malnutrition—but he has received lifesaving treatment. Hernon, just 18 months old, was put in the IRC's feeding program and after three weeks his weight increased to six kilos, or roughly 13 pounds.

This is a testament to the power of your donation.

For a limited time, your gift will go THREE TIMES as far to protect children like Hermon from the rising threat of starvation and help them grow up healthy and strong, as well as support families in crisis worldwide. >>

[March 24, 2024; Gedaref, Sudan] Hermon, an 18-month-old baby, receives a screening for acute malnutrition using MUAC (mid-upper arm circumference) tape from an IRC nutrition specialist. The red coloring on the MUAC tape indicates a severe risk of malnutrition.

Almas fled her home with her three children (just months after giving birth) for a simple, profound reason:

"The reason we left was fear. I just wanted my children to live... So we left without taking anything. I just took my children and two pieces of clothing and left."

Almas and her family arrived at a refugee settlement in Sudan with few resources—and confronted a terrifyingly bleak situation. Food is scarce because of the conflict, and children in Sudan, like Almas’s son Hermon, are at risk of starvation. (In Sudan, 220,000 children are at risk of starvation in the coming months.)

Baby Hernon was seen by an IRC nutrition specialist, and diagnosed with a severe risk of malnutrition.

"They provided me with medicine for the baby's head before, and they gave me some medicine in syrup form." Almas recalled, "In the first week, they gave him medicine and he got better. In the second week, they gave him pills and when he took them, his weight increased."

As an example of your impact, just $40 (TRIPLED TODAY) is enough to provide support for diagnosing acute malnutrition, and that is the first step to providing lifesaving treatment.

The reports of starvation in Sudan have already begun, and the scale of suffering is almost unimaginable. We need to take immediate action to avoid mass starvation.

The reality is that malnutrition is simple to treat. We know how to save lives like Hermon’s—we just need to reach more children with the simple, proven treatment they need to survive.

For a limited time, your gift will go THREE TIMES as far to protect children from the rising threat of starvation and to support families who are in dire need. >>
