Aloha,
This week Governor Josh Green announced that the first four tenants have moved into newly completed units in the La‘ikū temporary housing project along Lahainaluna Road in Lahaina, West Maui.
Led by Governor Green, the Hawaii Department of Transportation and the Hawaii Department of Education partnered with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement and the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund to complete the new housing for survivors of last year’s wildfires.
“It's heartwarming to welcome the first four families to La‘ikū as we continue to work with many dedicated partners across our state to provide safe and secure longer-term housing to survivors,” Governor Green said. “La‘ikū is one of many collaborative housing initiatives that is helping to support individuals and families as they rebuild their lives.”
La‘ikū will provide 16 two-bedroom, one-bath units at 560 sq. ft. each, built on approximately two acres of land that was previously acquired by the Hawaii Department of Transportation as part of the Lahaina Bypass project.
Monthly rent will be $1,750 which tenants can pay via personal funds, rental assistance from FEMA, or insurance proceeds.
There is no income limit for applicants, whose eligibility for tenancy will be verified as wildfire-impacted by the CNHA Kākoʻo Maui Resource Center.
Units must be occupied by a minimum of two up to a maximum of five people, and families who may have temporarily relocated to other islands are also eligible to apply.
We will continue to keep you updated on continuing recovery efforts on Maui and further progress in housing families displaced by the wildfires.
Thank you for supporting Josh and being a part of Team Green.
Mahalo,
Team Green
