Dear John,

July is Disability Pride Month and tomorrow we’ll mark the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was a milestone in protecting the civil rights of people with disabilities.

But there is still a lot of work to do. Voters with disabilities face many additional barriers to voting, including difficulties obtaining a voter ID when one is required.

There are more than 61 million disabled adults in the US. If disabled people voted at the same rate as non- or pre-disabled people (with the same demographics), there would be about 2 million more voters.

One of the reasons is the challenges they face in getting identification. Many don’t drive so they don’t have driver’s licenses, and they also don’t have their own transportation, which can make it difficult to get to the DMV for a state ID card. Traveling to the DMV and paying for an ID can also be costly, creating another barrier to access.

VoteRiders is here to help. We maintain a comprehensive resource center for voters with disabilities. Visit the resource center and share it with your family and friends!

And if a voter needs additional help getting an ID, VoteRiders will work with them to secure documents, appointments, transportation, and cover all costs.

VoteRiders is working to ensure that no voters with disabilities are ever turned away because they lack the proper ID, or stay home because they don’t know what ID they need to vote. This Disability Pride Month, help us spread the word. >> [link removed]
