John, since the fall of Roe v. Wade, the battle for abortion access is playing out at the state level like never before, and reproductive freedom increasingly hangs in the balance of state Supreme Courts.
That's why ensuring a strong pro-choice majority on state Supreme Courts is critical to safeguarding abortion access for years to come.
Just last year, EMILYs List-endorsed candidate Justice Janet Protasiewicz won her seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, flipping control to a liberal majority — and it's thanks to that majority that abortion access and voting rights are protected in Wisconsin today.
That was the first time EMILYs List got into a state Supreme Court race, and now, we're growing that work even more. I'll share more in a moment, but if you're fired up, will you donate now to support Democratic pro-choice women across the country who are fighting to protect reproductive freedom?
Today, we endorsed Justice Allison Riggs for the North Carolina Supreme Court. Justice Riggs has spent her entire career advocating for equal justice, and we know she has what it takes to beat her anti-choice opponent. Republicans currently have a 5-2 majority, so we must hold her seat in order to have a chance at flipping the court in future years.
Texans are experiencing one of the most severe abortion bans in the nation, but we can fight back by electing justices to the state Supreme Court who will restore and protect our fundamental freedoms. That's why we've endorsed Judge Christine Weems. Judge Weems is the best candidate to beat incumbent anti-choice extremist Justice John Devine.
In Michigan, EMILYs List has endorsed Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Thomas to hold our pro-choice majority in the state Supreme Court. Justice Bolden, the first Black woman to sit on the Michigan Supreme Court, has demonstrated her commitment to fairly interpreting the law and protecting the rights of Michiganders. Kimberly Thomas has spent her life pursuing justice for lower-income Americans and youth, and her devotion to defending our freedom will make her a great Supreme Court justice.
It's never been more important to have pro-choice justices on our highest courts. With the increasing number of abortion bans from coast to coast, state Supreme Courts play a critical role in protecting our reproductive freedom and deciding whether those bans can be implemented.
