Dear John,
Despite the efforts of my opponent to try to prevent it, the Recount has been set for next Thursday, August 1. My opponent sent two attorneys to the preliminary hearing last week, in an attempt to have the judge dismiss that which is provided under Virginia law. Thankfully, he didn’t prevail, and the Recount will move forward.
Now, my opponent is lying and claiming that taxpayers will have to fund the Recount. But he knows that my campaign is totally responsible for the cost, because the 0.6% margin is just outside of the 0.5% that qualifies for a state-funded Recount.
We owe it to the citizens of the 5th District to perform our due diligence and do everything we can to ensure the integrity and accuracy of this election. My opponent used to promote his election integrity bona-fides, but now he doesn’t seem so concerned about that regarding this race. He attended Stop the Steal rallies in 2020, and hosted showings of 2000 Mules in 2022, but now he is belittling our efforts to ensure the accuracy of this election.
But we will not be deterred. We have set up teams of observers and attorneys to cover the 24 localities for the Recount on August 1. The appointed chief judge has estimated that the state will charge us approximately $97,000 for their costs to conduct the Recount, and our legal fees are expected to cost about $50,000, bringing the total expected cost to about $150,000.
