WILDAID DELIVERS NEW PATROL BOAT TO COMBAT ILLEGAL FISHING IN GABON
In a significant milestone for marine conservation, WildAid recently presented a new patrol boat ([link removed]) named “Albacore” to Gabon’s General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The waters surrounding Gabon are a sanctuary for a vast array of wildlife, including the world’s largest nesting population of leatherback sea turtles, critically endangered humpback dolphins, and calving grounds for humpback whales. Gabon's old-growth mangrove forests serve as vital carbon sinks, storm buffers, and nurseries for myriad fish, crabs, and shrimp, supporting both the ecosystem and the coastal communities that rely on them.
The Albacore was designed to swiftly and efficiently patrol the vast expanse of Gabon’s Exclusive Economic Zone, which covers over 200,000 square kilometers. This enhanced capacity will enable Gabonese officers to monitor and respond to illegal activities more effectively, ensuring the protection of the nation’s rich marine ecosystems.
The Albacore is more than just a boat ([link removed]) ; it symbolizes the collective efforts and support of WildAid’s dynamic donors, who believe in preserving Gabon’s incredible marine biodiversity.
UNMASKING THE RISKS OF BUSHMEAT CONSUMPTION
WildAid and our partner Choice ([link removed]) have launched our Good-for-Nothing Bushmeat campaign calling on Vietnamese citizens to say “No” to consuming bushmeat. Bushmeat refers to meat from wild animals like wild pigs, civets, deer, and pangolins killed for food.
“With the Good-for-Nothing Bushmeat campaign, Choice and WildAid aim to inform the public of the threats to wildlife and habitat, and their own health, caused by bushmeat consumption. Our end goal is to eliminate bushmeat from being sold at delicacy restaurants and to encourage the public to contribute to wildlife conservation.” --Mr. Trần Thanh Kim Tiền, Marketing Communications Manager at Choice.
This initiative challenges outdated beliefs about bushmeat being “hygienic, organic, and gourmet,” highlighting its serious health risks and environmental impact. The campaign targets major cities in Vietnam, where 80% of bushmeat in the country is consumed.

SHARK FIN CONSUMPTION DROPS 34% IN THAILAND!
Exciting news! WildAid's new survey reveals that shark fin consumption in Thailand has dropped 34% over the past 6 years—equivalent to 8.1 million fewer servings annually.
This decline is thanks in part to growing awareness among the Thai public of the importance of sharks to ocean health. Increasing numbers of Thai people now realize that shark fin consumption is pushing these important animals towards extinction. Our survey found evidence to suggest that WildAid campaign initiatives to reduce demand for shark fin such as the ‘Chalong Mai Chalarm’ or ‘Celebrate with #NoSharkFin’ ([link removed]) campaign likely contributed to the dramatic decrease in demand between 2017 and 2023.
While the survey findings are encouraging, there is still work to be done to protect sharks and maintain healthy biodiversity at sea. WildAid’s continued efforts to increase the public’s awareness are crucial, especially with 56% of urban Thais still interested in trying shark fin.
