How a Kamala Harris Candidacy Could Supercharge Democrats’ Message on Abortion

President Joe Biden’s decision to not seek a second term — and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him — gives Democrats the opportunity to elevate an eager and consistent messenger on abortion rights heading into the first presidential election since the fall of Roe v. Wade.
Harris had already become the administration’s leading voice on the importance of abortion rights, one of the Democratic Party’s top issues, at the federal and state level. She has spent the last year using rallies and interviews to make a clear-eyed case to voters on how a second Donald Trump presidency and Republican majorities in Congress could restrict abortion access.
Harris’ nomination would present a stark departure from Biden, who anchored his reelection campaign on abortion but who at times struggled to articulate his party’s view that it is an essential right for women. Biden, a devout Roman Catholic, evolved his position on the issue over five decades in office, going from opposing most abortions to running for reelection on restoring federal protections for abortion under the framework of Roe v. Wade.

In our post-Citizens United world, where donations are considered “speech,” the flood of donations to Harris’ campaign after President Joe Biden withdrew on Sunday spoke volumes. If money talks, this rush of funds sounded like relief, excitement and even pride.
And many people are eager to see it. On Sunday night, the organizers behind the group Win With Black Women hosted a Zoom call featuring activists and influencers. More than 44,000 people joined the call, Bloomberg News reported.
The group said it raised over $1.5 million during the 90-minute call, signaling a surge of Black, women-led support for Harris. Black folks — Black women, in particular — were some of the most vocal critics of the campaign, led by Democratic insiders and backed by some media pundits, to get Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race. Their concerns were primarily due to a belief that Democratic power brokers would try to select a nominee to leapfrog Harris and lead a post-Biden ticket.

Donald Trump’s selection of Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate adds a staunch anti-abortion voice to the top of the Republican ticket.
Vance, who officially became the vice presidential nominee on Monday, previously described himself as “100% pro-life.” But the particulars of his stance have varied since he entered the political arena a few years ago — and his rhetoric appears to have increasingly aligned with Trump’s over time.
“I wanna save as many babies as possible,” he said. “And sure, I think it’s totally reasonable to say that late-term abortions should not happen, with reasonable exceptions.”
