Hi John - Imagine living in a crowded refugee camp right now, where social distancing is literally impossible. Where soap and clean water for hand washing is hard to get access to. Where health care services are limited and very basic. And where there is not a single ventilator available for over 3 million people. That is the situation here on the ground in the Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh, home of several large camps of Rohingya refugees who fled religious persecution in Myanmar. With the threat of a widespread coronavirus outbreak looming over them, Rohingya communities in the camps are terrified and desperate for information that they can use to protect themselves and their families. As the U.S. government responds to the public health and economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic at home, it must not forget the needs of some of the most desperate populations around the world, especially children. Please ask your members of Congress to provide robust funding for international response efforts in the next coronavirus response legislation. The poorest, most vulnerable children in the world face unique and severe challenges in widespread outbreaks such as this one. We know from previous experience that food will become more expensive and harder to access, leading to a rise in malnutrition that makes children more susceptible to illness. Disruptions in education not only affect a child’s development, but also increase the chances of a child being forced into labor or abused. And the impact is greatest on girls, who face an increased risk of child marriage and sexual exploitation during times of crisis. American generosity and moral leadership have given the world great hope during countless prior moments of global crisis. Years of effort have led to great progress in addressing issues of global poverty, health, nutrition and food security, and the treatment of refugees. We can’t allow this latest challenge to unwind that progress and lead to even greater suffering among the world’s most vulnerable populations, especially children. Send a message to your members of Congress – include robust funding for international response programs in the next coronavirus relief package. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
