Reading Group

Reading Group is meeting tonight, but the reading is short, and even if you can't finish it, you should join us for the conversation!

In his new book, "The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality," Sunkara explores socialism's history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision for its future, and why the socialist tradition still matters today. The discussion will be over the last chapter, which generally stands alone and can be read that way.

Because there is a sense that Bhaskar's book is a little too Western centric, we are also recommending reading the supplemental "Settler Colonialism Then and Now: A Conversation between J. Kehaulani and Patrick Wolfe."

Last Week in Houston DSA

The Housing and Tenants' Rights group met and discussed two main topics. First, they discussed the nascent Houston Tenants' Union and the ways we can support them. Second, they discussed the vital Stop TxDOT I-45 Expansion Coalition. Expanding I-45 will displace hundreds of low-income families and primarily benefit the wealthy suburban homeowners. If either of these issues sound like something you'd like to support, make sure to come out to their next meeting!

Our monthly General Meeting went great! Thanks to everyone who came out. Our National Convention delegates gave a brief summary of our experiences and what happened at the convention. We have a full document detailing everything that passed, the breakout sessions we went to, and our general thoughts. I'd especially recommend the latter, and would also recommend asking us about our thoughts! We also had Andy and Jazz from URGE talk to us about supporting sex workers in Houston and the state of Texas. Please follow them on twitter and instagram and sign the pledge to show our support!
