John,

On Monday, July 1, the Supreme Court issued a stunning ruling granting former president Donald Trump broad immunity for “official acts” he had undertaken as president.

I disagreed with the majority decision on the basis of a simple yet important principle.

No one, especially those holding the highest office in this country, should be above the law.

There has been a lot of news in recent weeks, but I would like to hear your personal opinion on this Supreme Court case, John. It holds enormous consequences for the future of American democracy.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent, “This new official-acts immunity now ‘lies like a loaded weapon’ for any President that wishes to place his own interests, his own political survival, or his own financial gain, above the interests of the Nation.”

No one should be afforded special privileges or immunity from prosecution for crimes just because of their wealth, power, or status.

In fact, legal accountability in those circumstances is the greatest test of whether the legal system works in the first place.
