It’s official: Newbern, Alabama will hold its first election since 1965
* A federal judge signed ([link removed]) a legal agreement allowing the Black mayor of a small Alabama town to lead his community after being blocked from taking office by his white predecessors. In 2025, the town will hold its first mayoral election in six decades.
* “After decades, we will finally be able to act as citizens to cast our ballots and actively participate in the democratic process,” Newbern Mayor Patrick Braxton said. “I look forward to working together with the city council and town residents to move forward and shape our collective future.”

Montana Supreme Court affirms victory for voters
* The Montana Supreme Court kept ([link removed]) in place a ruling that requires the Republican secretary of state to count signatures from so-called "inactive" voters in support of abortion rights and democracy ballot initiatives.
* A couple of weeks ago, advocacy groups filed a lawsuit ([link removed]) to support the ballot initiatives, arguing that Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen (R) was attempting to disenfranchise thousands of Montana voters from the constitutional initiative process by rejecting “inactive” voters’ signatures.
