Sandra Hemme spent 43 years in prison for a crime she did not commit. The likely murderer was a police officer; he was found to be in possession of many of the victim's personal belongings after the killing. But Ms. Hemme's psychiatric condition made her an easy scapegoat, and she lost more than four decades of her life.

When a judge finally ordered Ms. Hemme to be freed, Attorney General Andrew Bailey fought to keep her imprisoned. He appealed the case. He lost. He appealed again. He lost again. His office even told the prison to ignore the court order releasing Ms. Hemme.

During an emergency hearing, the court threatened to hold the Attorney General in contempt if Ms. Hemme was not immediately released, stating that it was "absolutely wrong" for the Attorney General to tell the prison to ignore a judicial order. So Ms. Hemme was freed.

Just days later, another judge freed Chris Dunn, a man who was wrongfully convicted and held for 33 years. Again, Attorney General Andrew Bailey appealed the ruling and is fighting to keep Mr. Dunn behind bars.

Marcellus Williams, another inmate, is facing execution in September. He was previously scheduled for execution, but then-Governor Eric Greitens stopped the process because of DNA evidence indicating Mr. Williams was wrongfully incarcerated. The execution was rescheduled by Governor Mike Parson.

Mr. Williams was set to show a judge the new DNA evidence, but Andrew Bailey is trying to stop that hearing, claiming that Mr. Williams should be executed regardless of what the new DNA evidence shows.

Andrew Bailey has a long track record of using taxpayer money to keep innocent people behind bars. That horrific practice has to end.

As Attorney General, I will start Missouri's first Civil Rights Division to protect our civil liberties from abusive government. I will work with prosecutors who believe their offices made mistakes, help investigate innocence claims, and ensure that we punish the real perpetrators, not innocent Missourians.

I've represented several Missourians who were wrongfully incarcerated and, through lawsuits, changed the illegal jailing process in St. Louis City. We deserve an Attorney General who will always stand up for us, and that's my commitment to you.
