Dear John, While Trump beats the war drums against Venezuela and needlessly cripples Cuba with sanctions, more than ever we need to build a movement of folks who believe in peace and cooperation with our neighbors in the South. Shamefully, the Trump administration announced that the “Monroe Doctrine 2.0” is in effect — referring to a policy of U.S. interference in Latin America that lasted for over 100 years. It only ended with FDR’s Good Neighbor policy, which sought to break the trend of domination and establish ties of friendship with Latin America. That’s what we need right now, a relaunch of FDR’s policy, applying it to the 21st century. That’s where we come in. Add your name to back the New Good Neighbor Policy, and when 20,000 people join, CODEPINK will pull out all the stops to make sure lawmakers hear our call for peace and cooperation with our neighbors. Our militaristic foreign policy — a policy that has led us to become a global bully — affects everything from migration to the environment, from poverty here at home to poverty abroad. If the US were a Good Neighbor, not only would people in Latin America be better off, but people in the US would be better off as well. Let’s be realistic— this probably won’t happen while Trump is in office. But we still have allies in Congress, and if we can build a huge movement of people backing this, we can become the guiding light for how the government engages with Latin America for generations to come. This isn’t radical. This isn’t even a new idea. And Coronavirus has shown the entire world that “the fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war”, as UN Secretary General António Guterres so aptly put it. Over the past year, we have worked on stopping a potential war against Venezuela, ending the cruel embargo against Cuba, and denouncing the US-backed coup in Bolivia. A Good Neighbor policy would encompass all of these things — so let’s do everything we can to make it happen! With hope, |
