Strengthening U.S. Rule of Law at a Critical Time

At a time of deep division in the United States, Americans overwhelmingly agree: the rule of law matters. Early analysis of our latest U.S. polling shows strong, continued, bipartisan commitment to rule of law values. We're gearing up to present new data in an upcoming U.S. report to help advance crucial efforts to ensure fair and free elections; the peaceful and lawful transition of power; and other rule of law priorities.  

We continue to work closely with state and local leaders eager to take action in their communities, through our U.S. Rule of Law Toolkit and events like "Ideas to Action: How Your Bar Can Promote the Rule of Law Right Now," hosted by the National Conference of Bar Presidents last month. 

On August 1, we'll host a democracy and rule of law convening at the American Bar Association’s annual meeting in Chicago. Poland's minister of justice will keynote our “Meeting the Challenge” event and share rule of law lessons learned.
Discussion topics will include countering disinformation and threats to judicial security. Learn more and register today. 

World Justice Challenge 2024: Celebrating Changemakers! 

The 2024 World Justice Challenge: "The Rule of Law: Foundation of Democracy" is set to culminate in Chicago, featuring 30 innovative projects from 23 countries. Selected from an impressive 424 applications spanning 109 nations, these finalists will compete for $100,000 in prizes across five categories: electoral processes, justice institutions, media & information, youth engagement, and advancing the rule of law in the United States.

New WJP Data Identifies Reforms That Work in Mexico 

We were honored to be joined by Mexican state and federal officials overseeing successful rule of law reforms at the June launch of the WJP Mexico States Rule of Law Index. The sixth edition of our subnational index shows that overall, Mexico’s 
below-average rule of law performance remains largely stagnant. But it also identifies meaningful pockets of progress where states have improved security, reduced corruption, made government more open, and provided the Mexican people with greater access to justice. An audience of policymakers, donors, advocates, and business leaders gathered in Mexico City to hear what is working and how the Index is helping. 

Tackling Rule of Law Challenges in Asia Pacific

In June, the World Justice Project convened over 50 rule of law scholars and experts at the Advancing the Rule of Law in Asia Pacific research consortium conference in Singapore. Partnering with the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Asian Legal Studies, we hosted dynamic discussions on current rule of law challenges in the region. Inspired by cutting-edge research on criminal justice, judicial independence, and government accountability in the region, participants identified new opportunities to strengthen the rule of law in Asia Pacific. In the coming months, we look forward to circulating key takeaways with regional leaders committed to evidence-based policy solutions. 

From Data to Action in the Dominican Republic

In April, the president of the Dominican Republic’s supreme court told the nation’s judges that using WJP’s data is key to advancing his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and people-centered justice. WJP Executive Director Elizabeth Andersen also addressed the country’s National Judicial Conference, emphasizing that justice systems must prioritize people’s legal needs if they are to close the massive global justice gap of 5.1 billion people. During the well-attended event, WJP signed a memorandum of understanding with the judiciary to advance open justice in the Dominican Republic and leverage people-centered data in the design, monitoring and evaluation of justice policies and programs.  

Championing People-Centered Justice at the World Bank 

In June, at the World Bank’s Justice and the Rule of Law Global Forum in Washington, D.C., the bank’s global governance director, Arturo Herrera Gutierrez, emphasized our findings on gender-based barriers to justice in calling for urgent reforms. Throughout the conference, WJP staff made the case to leverage people-centered data to advance the rule of law and close the global justice gap.
