Leadership

Greetings, readers, from the depths of summer! This week’s Leadership newsletter focuses on the present and future of nonprofit news in the United States. Even as local newsrooms are closing and laying off staff, the relatively new and rapidly growing model of nonprofit news offers a great deal of promise, including—perhaps—the potential for building a healthier and more just news ecosystem.

First, I share some notes from the Institute for Nonprofit News’ recent conference. Next, Brian Joseph digs into the recent and seemingly unending series of layoffs in public radio across the United States. Then, we revisit the launch of Press Forward, a major philanthropic effort to support local news. Finally, we conclude with another invitation to attend our upcoming webinar, “Hidden Gems: Actionable Lessons from The Untold Stories of Black Philanthropists.”

The Leadership desk is always looking for fresh ideas! Email pitches to Leadership Editor Isaiah Thompson at [email protected]
