We’re please to share that the 2024 EARNCon summary agenda is now LIVE on the conference web site. Check it out HERE ([link removed]) (and while you’re there, there’s still time to register before the Aug. 16 late registration deadline). Below are additional details on pre-conference skills workshops for those considering arriving early to participate.
EARNCon 2024 Pre-conference Bootcamps
1:00-4:00 pm, Wednesday, September 11
We’re excited to announce two tracks of pre-conference skill-building workshops to kick off EARNCon 2024. These sessions will take place on site at the conference hotel prior to the conference opening plenary and dinner Wednesday evening and are open to all registered EARNCon attendees.
Track 1 - Data Bootcamp
State of Working X-a-thon: Using EPI Data Resources to Conduct Economic Analysis
Past EARNCons have included R and Stata Data Bootcamps ([link removed]) with the goal of making economic analysis accessible to all. This year, we’re expanding our data bootcamp to coders and non-coders alike. Whether you're a coding expert, a spreadsheet aficionado, or anywhere in between, this "hack-a-thon" style workshop aims to engage researchers of all experience levels, build community, and facilitate skill-sharing across our network.
This year’s data workshop will draw directly from the 2024 EARN Data Curriculum. Attendees will work in teams and use a combination of EPI data tools and publicly available data to identify trends and tell a novel economic narrative about a state or region of their choosing—hence, the “State of Working X-a-thon.” Our goal is to foster proficiency in turning readily available data into impactful and actionable insights. Attendees will:
* Meet and work with researchers from across the nation
* Gain hands-on experience using data resources developed by EARN’s experts
* Exchange technical skills and analysis workflows.
* Get answers to technical questions from EPI experts
We welcome all researchers, and anyone interested in the research process, to attend this session—no coding experience required! If you have questions or want to know more in advance, contact Daniel Perez at

Track 2 – Organizing Bootcamp
Building Power Outside the Statehouse and City Halls: How Organizing Can Boost Your Advocacy Game.
EARN groups and partners across the country continue to demonstrate that successful policy campaigns depend on groups working in coalition toward common goals, with a shared understanding of how different types of organizations work and how best to work together. This workshop will focus on exploring best practices for research, advocacy, policy, and service organizations partnering with organizers and organizing groups.
This is not a workshop primarily for organizers; it’s a workshop for anyone who works with organizers. Whether you’re a researcher, policy analyst, or service provider… maximizing your impact depends on strong partnerships with grassroots community groups, labor unions, worker centers, and other base-building organizations. Base-building organizations, in turn, often rely on the kinds of analysis, data, and policy expertise that other partners can provide.
This workshop will include attention to:
* Examples of successful organizing work that built real people power
* The elements of an organizing campaign
* How policy and research work can support the work of organizers
* Building and managing coalitions between organizing groups and policy/research/service groups.
Presenters will include organizers, EARN group leaders, and others who can speak to the power of research + organizing + advocacy. Attendees will be introduced to a new toolkit EARN is developing to help groups plan organizing campaigns. If you have questions or want to know more, contact Dave Kamper at
