I first worked with CREW back in 2017 on a lawsuit against former President Trump to stop him from violating the Constitution by illegally receiving payments from foreign governments.

The foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution prohibited Trump from receiving anything of value from foreign governments, including foreign government-owned businesses, without the approval of Congress.

But since Trump refused to divest from his businesses, he continued to get cash and favors from foreign governments – whether it was through guests and events at his hotels, leases in his buildings or valuable real estate deals abroad. Trump conducted business with countries like China, India, Indonesia and the Philippines, and when he was president, his companies’ acceptance of any benefits from the governments of those countries violated the Constitution.

The framers of the Constitution did everything they could to protect against corruption, and I’m proud to have worked with CREW in their work to hold Trump accountable to the law and to these crucial constitutional protections.

And the thing about CREW is that they will take any issue head-on if it means rooting out corruption in our government or defending our democracy.

Ever since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, we’ve seen dark money infiltrating our elections, and allowing politicians to be bought and paid for to an unprecedented degree.

But CREW won’t stand for it. CREW works persistently to expose the dark money in politics and the corporations and wealthy donors behind the onslaught of cash.
