This is crucial because classrooms filled with student choice and voice can sometimes lead to passionate debate and conversation. The toolkit provides a step-by-step method to help students navigate these discussions by establishing shared norms for respectful communication. These norms, created by the students themselves, build a foundation of trust within the classroom. Ultimately, a classroom built on civil dialogue fosters not only a wealth of knowledge but also the development of strong character for all students.

The 36th annual Liberty Medal will be awarded to America's storyteller, Ken Burns, for illuminating the nation's greatest triumphs and tragedies and inspiring all of us to learn about the principles at the heart of the American idea. The National Constitution Center will honor the renowned documentary filmmaker at a ceremony overlooking Independence Mall.
