Today marks 50 years of Earth Day. Although we can't be together volunteering to plant trees or remove invasive species – it's a good opportunity to reflect on the history of Earth Day and speak out against Trump's disastrous assault on our environment.

Following a terrible oil spill off the coast of California in 1969, activists began to speak up for protecting the Earth, and the energy of that movement led to the first Earth Day in 1970.

Earth Day is an opportunity for us to speak up in support of our environment, and make sure environmental disasters like the Santa Barbara oil spill never happen again. Unfortunately, just last month, Trump's EPA issued a sweeping suspension of its enforcement of environmental laws, telling companies they would not need to meet environmental standards during the coronavirus outbreak.

The temporary policy, which has set no end date, would:

• allow polluters to skirt environmental laws without penalties;
• limit the use of research based on private health data, restricting the EPA's use of science when making rules.

This is inviting another crisis like the Santa Barbara oil spill: sign the petition and demand the EPA reverse these policies.

As the country and public health officials are fighting COVID-19, the EPA is quietly working to undermine our laws. This is unacceptable. Sign the petition: Demand that the EPA reverse their deregulation policies immediately.
