SFMTA Budget Wins

In a historic move, Muni will now be free to all youth and individuals experiencing homelessness. This is a major investment in future ridership and will stop trapping kids - and those experiencing homelessness - with paperwork requirements and fines. This change is part of the new SFMTA budget, which the Board of Directors unanimously approved yesterday.

While we didn't get everything we wanted in the budget, we stopped SFMTA from raising cash fares above $3, and increased metering so cars pay their fair share on congested corridors. These are huge wins that would not have happened without our advocacy.

Looking forward, we need to change the way we fund transit. The budget process forced an untenable choice between raising fares and losing service. Service cuts hurt riders, but so do fare increases and sales taxes. Given the current pandemic, the need to develop equitable funding for transit is more important than ever.

You can read SFMTA's full budget presentation and staff report here.

Masks for Muni

We handed out 50 face shields and masks yesterday to Muni operators as part of our campaign to get drivers and riders the personal protective equipment they need. Everywhere we went, operators were thankful for our support and thrilled to hear we have another 300 masks coming later this week.

While SFMTA is working hard to get staff the equipment they need, there is still a lot of unmet demand for masks and other protective equipment. If you are able, please donate to cover costs so we can support Muni operators and get masks to riders as well. You can also help our Masks for Muni campaign by spreading the word on email, Twitter, and Facebook to help us reach more people.

(Every donation shows your support for our work, so we'll activate or renew your membership with San Francisco Transit Riders!)

Happy Earth Day!

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, organizations from across the country are mobilizing online to combat the climate crisis. Via Earth Day Live, groups from around the world are participating in a 24-hour event with global conversations, calls to action, performances, and video teach-ins designed to spur bold action for people and the planet.

Equitable, reliable, and affordable public transit is critical to addressing climate change. Almost half of all emissions in San Francisco come from the transportation sector. Public transit contributes less than 5% of those emissions despite delivering one-third of all trips. By working to improve public transit for all, you're helping address the climate crisis.
