Friend,

July 2024 has been a news cycle like no other. Between the assassination attempt on former President Trump and President Biden dropping out of the race, we’re watching events unfold at an unprecedented pace — and are witnessing the wild, often-dangerous ride that media and tech companies are taking us on in the process.

The bottom line for us at Free Press Action is that whoever the nominees are, we have a job to do: Make public policies for media and tech that support a thriving and multiracial democracy.

We are here to end the digital divide and to expand access to quality news and civic information. We are here to fight back against decades of rampant media consolidation, racist media coverage and billionaire-controlled platforms that have put profit above all else.

Whatever happens this week, this month or this November, Free Press Action is here to push for policies that put people like you first. That’s why we released the Media and Technology Policy Platform: A Guide for Candidates and Policymakers[1] last month: to showcase our vision for how to achieve unfettered and affordable access to communication services — and a media system that provides accurate news and information.

Our job at Free Press Action is to keep our eyes on the corporate actors trying to control and manipulate the media — and to monitor policymakers, whether that means stopping bad bills or advancing visionary legislation. We will be taking our fights to the courts and pushing against things like the TikTok ban and efforts to overturn the FCC’s Net Neutrality rules.

Thank you for all your support over the years. We promise to continue the fight no matter what happens in the coming weeks and hope we can count on you being by our side.

Best,

Craig & Jessica
