Americans with Disabilities Act, 34th Anniversary and Commemoration, July 26, 2024 at George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum

ADA Signing Ceremony

Join the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD) for a thoughtful commemoration of the July 26, 1990 signing ceremony of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event will be livestreamed from the George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas, 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. on July 26, 2024.

Participating in the event will be Lex Frieden [ [link removed] ], one of the architects of the ADA, and Robert Holzweiss [ [link removed] ], Deputy Director of the Bush Presidential Library. Frieden, a prominent disability rights advocate, and Holzweiss, a long-time employee of the George H.W. Bush Library, will discuss the legacy of the ADA and share original videos and photographs from the historic ADA signing.

Governor Abbott, in his 34th ADA Anniversary Proclamation [ [link removed] ], recognizes the “Texas factor” in the signing ceremony of the ADA:

“Proudly, Texas has never shied away from advocating for equal disability rights, and on this day, we honor and recognize leaders of the disability rights movement. In addition to Texas' very own George H. W. Bush, Justin Dart and Lex Frieden have embodied the spirit of justice and equality that defines our people and have ensured that each of us has a chance to pursue the great American Dream.”

A live audio-visual stream of the commemoration will be available to the public. The Committee will record the event and make the recording available upon request. Contact (512) 463-5739 or email [email protected].
