Georges River Land Trust NatureFest: Reading the Forest: Identifying Trees

The Georges River Land Trust is putting on a 2-day event to bring people closer to nature with expert talks, hands-on workshops, and family-friendly activities.  

On Thursday afternoon (July 25), join Maine Forest Service District Forester Allyssa Gregory for a session titled “Reading the Forest: Identifying Trees” 

Other sessions will include information on local fish and wildlife, gardening with native plants, trees and live animals.

Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association Low-Impact Forestry program events

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) Low-Impact Forestry program has several events coming up this summer:  

Open-to-All Chainsaw Safety - July 20-21 [ [link removed] ] 

Learn safe chainsaw operation in these one-and-a-half-day courses. We’ll cover personal protective equipment (PPE) and chainsaw selection, and practice safe handling and open-face bore cutting techniques with instructor supervision. Designed for beginners. 

Logging With Farm Tractors & Forestry Winches - August 3 [ [link removed] ] 

Learn the basic skills needed to safely use a winch-equipped farm tractor in the woods. This beginner-level course will cover basic tractor and winch operation, building hitches, skid trail layout, landing management and techniques to limit residual stand damage. The course will not include hands-on tree felling instruction. 

Natural Dyeing: Forest & Field - August 17 [ [link removed] ] 

Learn to dye fabrics with locally foraged plant materials in this introductory natural dyeing workshop, open to new and experienced dyers alike. Participants will tie-dye cotton bandanas with goldenrod and experiment with wool yarn using bark, leaves, seeds, and roots from native and invasive species that can provide lasting color. 

Sustainable Forest Foraging - August 21 [ [link removed] ] 

Join the Low-Impact Forestry program as we learn from Sarah Robinson from Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District and Dustin Small from Bissel Brothers Three Rivers about identifying and sustainably harvesting forest foods. Together, they will teach us about common edible plants found in Maine's forests - right here in Unity at the MOFGA campus. 

Ecology of Grief: Mourning and Celebrating Changing Forests - August 24 [ [link removed] ] 

In this workshop, we’ll explore the reality of ecological grief and create space for collective mourning, practice a simple grief ritual, and consider how we might transform our grief to power, agency, and even joy. 

Introduction to Bandsaw Milling - September 23 [ [link removed] ] 

Join professional sawyer Nick Zandstra for a hands-on opportunity to learn about portable bandsaw mills. The course will cover basic mill operation, mill yard layout and techniques to maximize lumber quality while milling logs harvested from the MOFGA woodlot.

Browntail Moths: Why are they a problem?

*Event Type:* Browntail Moth, Workshop/Training 

Join Maine Forest Service entomologist Brittany Schappach for an educational session on browntail moths (Euproctis chrysorrhea (L.)). Topics will include browntail moth biology, life cycle, prevention methods, and management methods to reduce their presence on your property. 

This free event is organized by Friends of Taunton Bay and no registration is required to attend.

Maine Climate Council is Looking for Input on Climate Action Strategies

The Maine Climate Council is considering a wide variety of strategies as it updates the state climate action plan, "Maine Won’t Wait". The plan is packed with actionable strategies and goals to emit less carbon, produce energy from renewable sources and protect our natural resources, communities and people from the effects of climate change. 

To help ensure the plan reflects the diverse needs of Maine communities, The Maine Climate Council is distributing a survey for any interested parties to participate in and let them know what is important to individuals and their communities in climate action.
