Dear John,
Last Friday, Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs (HSGAC), introduced the Enhanced Oversight and Accountability in Screening Act. This crucial legislation marks a significant step towards rectifying discriminatory practices in watchlisting systems, ensuring a fair and transparent redress process for travelers unjustly flagged under Homeland Security screenings.
Emgage Action is proud to have worked closely with the Senator's HSGAC staff to advocate for these reforms, balancing national security with civil rights and liberties. Over several months, we engaged with his office to start reforming policies. The watchlist has faced criticism for disproportionately targeting ethnic and religious minorities, particularly Muslims, and for its lack of notification and flawed criteria, which make removal nearly impossible and reflect increased government monitoring.
