Today is Earth Day’s 50th anniversary! We’re gearing up for our virtual “Uniting From Home” Earth Day celebration this Saturday.

To show your Earth Day spirit, we encourage you to post a photo from a past Earth Day on social media. If you use the hashtags #GrassrootsClimate and #EarthDay, we may feature your post during our virtual event this weekend.

So far, more than 2,600 people have registered to attend. We’d love to see you there!

Other news this week:

A time of sharing: As people receive their COVID-19 relief checks, some who are in a position to do so have been passing those funds along to other people or causes. On social media, the hashtag #sharemycheck has these stories. CCL’s Madeleine Para posted on Twitter about her decision to share her check.

Rick Steves’ Europe posts about CCE: As part of their Climate Smart Commitment, travel organizer Rick Steves’ Europe awarded a grant to Citizens’ Climate Education. They’ve now posted an interview with CCE on their website to spread the word about our work.

Hang out with Ashley: This week’s staff Happy Hour guest is Ashley Hunt-Martorano, CCL Marketing Manager. Tune in on Friday afternoon to learn about the amazing stuff Ashley does on CCL’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, and maybe you’ll even get to meet her pup, Murphy!

CCL part of global Earth Day event: International CCLers David Michael Terungwa (CCL Africa) and James Collis (CCL Europe) participated in an Earth Day livestream today. Check out the recording and hop to 2:41:16 to hear their remarks.

Take action this week

If you have a little time:  Write a letter to the editor for Earth Day. Here are some ideas of topics that can help you connect Earth Day, climate change, and the pandemic. You can submit your letter to your local newspapers using our easy LTE tool: cclusa.org/lte.

If you have more time: Tune in to CCL’s Health Action Team call with climate communication expert Dr. Ed Maibach. Dr. Maibach, co-founder of the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication, will explain how to discuss climate action while being sensitive to the devastation wrought by COVID-19. Here are details for joining the call on Monday, April 27.

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more.

Browse CCL Community’s Event Calendar to find upcoming events, trainings, and calls you can join.

Chapters: Book club connects volunteers

With the current pandemic putting people in lockdown, the Climate Book Club has become a way that volunteers in Dallas are staying connected to one another. The book club, started last year by CCL member Melissa Ahmed, met at a local cafe and bookstore. As social distancing became the norm, the club moved to Zoom meetings to discuss the books they’re reading. “This is an ideal time for our members to curl up with a book at home,” Melissa says. You can learn more about the book club and how to join their next meeting in this Community post.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. Even if you’re not planning to start a book club, there’s a lot you can do to develop your chapter and keep folks excited to work on climate. Watch or read our training on “Keeping Volunteers Engaged.”

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst: Our mortality is something we’d prefer to not dwell on, but the COVID-19 crisis is causing many of us to think about getting our affairs in order. CCL’s Development Director Lynate Pettengill, pictured above with her son and daughter-in-law, recently did exactly that. Now CCL  is partnering with FreeWill so you can create an advance health directive, power of attorney and/or a will free of charge. Read more.
