Hey, John,
There’s really never a dull moment in politics.
On September 19, 1796, George Washington shocked our young Republic when he began circulating his farewell address, announcing to the nation that he would not seek reelection to a third term as President. It was an unprecedented decision—the United States had, in its short history, only entrusted one man to lead them, but for the good of his country, he knew when the time had come to step aside and pass the torch.
Washington’s farewell address was one of the most important political documents from the era of America’s founding—while the Declaration of Independence declared our liberty, and the Constitution established our government, the Farewell Address secured its continuity. In stepping aside, Washington taught our nation to move on.
We can only hope that history will remember President Biden’s decision to step aside yesterday in similar terms: a courageous decision to close out a legacy of accomplishment and service and pass the torch to a new generation of leadership.
It’s a new day. It’s a new moment. But our fight remains the same. Now, as ever, our focus turns toward November: defeating far-right extremism, taking our state back, and electing Democrats up and down the ballot—from Kamala Harris for United States President to Wesley Harris for North Carolina Treasurer and beyond.
It won’t be easy, but I know we can do it. Democrats are putting in the work this year—and I don’t say that idly. When I look at what our party is doing in this state, I see more energy and enthusiasm from our volunteers than I’ve seen since 2008.
And I’m proud to be doing my part as a standard bearer for our economic message, running a true one hundred county campaign and preaching to voters in every single corner of North Carolina that Democrats are the only party working to ensure that this is a state where every single one of our neighbors has access to the opportunity they need to succeed and thrive.
Because Democrats understand the context in which we live in North Carolina, the ways we’ve succeeded before, and how to make North Carolina a place that invests in its people again.
I hope that I can count on your support for that effort. Any amount you can contribute will help us dream bigger, do more, and spread the word that it’s a new day for our state and our nation and a new dawn for our people. [[link removed]]

Wesley Harris is a North Carolina native and the only PhD economist in the General Assembly. First elected in 2018, he has been fighting hard for the residents of southern Mecklenburg County and working to make our state the best place in the country to live, work, and start a family. Now, Wesley is running for Treasurer to make an investment in our state's greatest asset, its people. Together, Wesley believes that we can unlock the potential of our people and build opportunity for every North Carolinian.
