Biden Drops Out: A Call for Democrats to Address Injustices and Correct Course

Dear Email,

In light of President Biden's recent decision not to run for reelection, we must acknowledge the deep stain the President has left on his legacy over the past 9 months by funding and unabashedly supporting Israel's atrocities in Gaza. Now the President is no longer seeking reelection we call on him to make amends and change course on Palestine before his term ends.

To start, we call upon President Biden to immediately:

  1. Implement and ensure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
  2. Enforce an arms embargo on Israel.
  3. Reinstate funding to UNRWA, as the U.S. stands alone in withholding aid from this crucial humanitarian agency.
  4. End all American support for Israel’s genocidal actions against Palestinians.

As we look to the future of the Democratic Party, whether the next nominee is Vice President Kamala Harris or another candidate, they must learn from President Biden’s failures on Palestine. Our YouGov-AJP-Action poll found that more than 1 in 5 Democrats and independents in key swing states were less likely to vote for President Biden due to Israel’s genocide in Gaza—proving Americans opposed him not only because of his cognitive decline but also his immoral and unwavering support for Israel's internationally recognized system of apartheid, occupation of Palestine and ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

Upholding justice and human rights will require the next Democratic leader to disavow Biden's stance on Gaza and chart a course grounded in peace, equity, and respect for all peoples. The path to restoring the faith of the American people and the global community starts with addressing these profound injustices and reflecting the demands of the Democratic base. This includes implementing a permanent ceasefire, imposing an arms embargo on Israel, ending U.S. support for Israel's genocidal actions against Palestinians, refunding UNRWA, recognizing the recent  International Court of Justice’s decision that determined Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and should come to an end “as rapidly as possible,” and ensuring accountability.

Time is running out for Democrats to take accountability and correct their course to prevent another Trump presidency. Failing to change their stance on the genocide in Gaza will only continue to deepen divisions and disillusionment within the party, making it harder to unify and mobilize voters in the upcoming election. The time for action is now. The party must listen to Americans demanding justice and real change. Using Trump as a scarecrow will not be a successful strategy for Democrats. Rather, they must offer viable and moral alternatives to his empty and dangerous rhetoric.

In solidarity,
Americans for Justice in Palestine Action
