American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) National President Everett Kelley issued the following statement after President Biden announced that he will not seek reelection in the 2024 presidential race:
"President Biden's leadership the past four years has been undeniable. When our country, our government, our union and the world needed him most, he stepped up and led us away from the precipice of a dark future. He is an American hero, and we will forever be in his debt.
"Now that he has decided to transition out of electoral politics, it's time for us all to recommit to the important work in front of us. After four years of strong gains under the Biden-Harris Administration, AFGE is committed to ensuring that such growth continues under a new pro-union Administration.
"Throughout AFGE's presidential endorsement process, and in the many months since, AFGE members have made clear that their top priority in 2024 is defeating Donald Trump and stopping anti-worker efforts like Project 2025. Another Trump Administration would be a threat to our democracy, our rights, and our freedoms. No one should mistake the difficult, painful decisions of the past few weeks for a lack of resolve. Our members are more committed than ever to continuing the work we've started and stopping the planned takeover of our government in its tracks with a resounding victory at the ballot box this November.
"It is paramount that our union do what it can to continue the gains that we have seen under the Biden-Harris Administration over these last four years. While the Democratic Party works to formally select its new nominee, AFGE remains steadfast in the work that is already ongoing to mobilize en masse and elect pro-AFGE allies up and down the ballot in November. We encourage all of our members to get registered, pledge to volunteer, and remain firmly in the fight."
