I watched the RNC convention last week. I saw the crowds with bandages on their ears, watched Hulk Hogan rip off his shirt, heard Kid Rock try to sing. I also heard Donald Trump’s speech. I watched him try to stay on message, reading listlessly from the teleprompter, and then saw him come alive when he went off script, ranting about illegal immigrants, Hannibal Lecter, and a stolen election. I saw that nothing had changed.
Today though, President Biden changed everything. By choosing to step down and endorse Vice President Harris, Biden has given this election the electrical shock that it needed. A prosecutor versus a convicted felon. A woman with a history of fighting for women’s rights and bodies versus a man who has fully endorsed Project 2025. A candidate who can stay on message versus a candidate who doesn’t know what his message is. This moment has not only invigorated our chances of saving our democracy, this has turned the entire election on its head. This new energy could change Congress. It could change state legislatures. It could change city council. Everything is different now than it was just two hours ago.
What does that mean for the 26 million IDless Americans? It means we could have state legislatures that want to pass laws to increase access to IDs. It means we could have city councils that want to create new opportunities to get IDs for their citizens. It means Congress could pass our bill. After Grants Pass, I was feeling hopeless. How do we end homelessness when the Supreme Court just made it legal to criminalize sleeping outside but officials like Mayor London Breed say housing is not the solution to end homelessness but jail is? How do we help 26 million American adults get jobs and health care if we can’t get IDs into their hands? I have been filled with questions, and doubt. Now I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I see how we can do this, and I hope you do too.
We will spend the next 107 days endorsing and supporting pro-ID candidates and helping them get elected. We will work on the ground and online to get voters to the polls. We will do everything we can to make sure that the 26 million have a voice.
Will you join us?
Let’s do this,
Kat
