The Republican National Convention has concluded, but the true danger to our economy is only now coming into focus. While the media fixates on convention speeches and other campaign rhetoric, a far more dangerous plan lurks beneath the surface.

The GOP convention may have presented a sanitized version of the Republican vision for America, but Project 2025 reveals their true intentions. It starts (but doesn’t end) with extending the disastrous Trump-GOP tax cuts, portions of which expire next year. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that extending the Trump tax cuts alone could add a staggering $5 trillion to our national debt over the next decade.[1] This is a direct threat to Social Security, Medicare, and other vital programs millions of Americans rely on.

But Project 2025 goes further in making our tax code even more unfair. It cuts taxes on the rich and corporations even more than the Trump law did. Worse, this radical plan aims to permanently alter the way our government functions, making it nearly impossible for future administrations and Congress to address economic crises or fund crucial public investments.

Even though the media is working to portray Trump’s speech as a call for “unity,” Project 2025 would divide our country even more deeply between the haves and have-nots. That’s because it does even more damage beyond its radical tax cuts:

It would require an undemocratic three-fifths majority to reform the tax code, effectively locking in these regressive changes and hobbling future governments.[2] That means that even if nearly 60% of Congress wanted to make reforms to the tax system or raise revenue in response to a national crisis, they would be forbidden to do so.

The plan slashes IRS funding, making it easier for wealthy tax cheats to game the system while honest Americans foot the bill. It's a deliberate attempt to create a two-tiered tax system where the rich play by their own set of rules.

Massive revenue cuts of the type envisioned by Project 2025 would force reductions in essential services at federal, state, and local levels, imperiling healthcare, child care, education, housing, nutrition, infrastructure, and much more.

By slashing taxes on corporations and investment income, Project 2025 would accelerate the already alarming trend of wealth concentration at the top. This would further widen the gap between the ultra-wealthy and everyday Americans, potentially leading to increased economic instability and social unrest.

The Republican National Convention just wrapped up in Milwaukee but while the media focuses on election horse races, a dangerous economic plan is flying under the radar. It's called Project 2025, and it threatens to undo the progress we’ve made in starting to hold wealthy and corporate tax dodgers accountable by doubling down on―and even expanding―the Trump-GOP tax scam.[1]

While they didn't mention it by name, the policies outlined by Trump and the Republicans at the convention reveal their true agenda: Project 2025―a radical blueprint to lock in and worsen inequality in our tax system and economy.

The architects of this plan are betting the public won’t recognize the danger in their radical scheme, especially in the afterglow of the convention. They're counting on voters not understanding how these changes would impact their lives for the worse. We can't let that happen.

Even more troubling, Project 2025 aims to lock in these regressive changes by requiring an undemocratic three-fifths majority to reform taxes in the future, hamstringing future majorities in Congress from addressing economic inequalities or responding to national crises like natural disasters and war.
