This week marks four years since, I lost my friend, mentor and predecessor Congressman John Lewis. He described the right to vote as "sacred." I'm continuing the legacy of Congressman John Lewis by fighting to ensure everyone has access to the ballot box. To ensure access to the ballot box, I cosponsored the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R Lewis Voting Rights Act. Together they work to keep voting accessible to all Americans. You can think of these bills as the offense and the defense of our fight: each is invaluable on its own, but both are required for meaningful, lasting success.
The appropriately named John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is the defense, it ensures people don’t have their right to vote infringed. It modernizes the Voting Rights Act that Congressman Lewis organized, fought, and bled for, and strengthens it against the Republican Supreme Court’s repeated efforts to tear it down.
