Jack, Governor Wes Moore of Maryland recently issued a landmark executive order pardoning 175,000 cannabis convictions. This historic move marks a significant victory in the justice system and our approach to the War on Drugs, which has long disproportionately impacted communities of color.

Governor Moore’s actions provide a robust framework for reconciliation and fairness. By eliminating the long-lasting barriers imposed by these convictions, such as difficulties in securing employment, housing, and education, Maryland is acknowledging the undue hardships imposed on thousands of Marylanders and setting a model for the nation to follow.

As states across the country continue to legalize and decriminalize marijuana, it makes less sense to keep punishing people under old laws for actions that are no longer illegal. It is unjust to let past convictions for marijuana possession dictate and diminish a person’s quality of life.

This is more than a movement for marijuana pardons; if we want real relief for those harmed by the criminalization of marijuana, we must address the more complicated charges that brand millions of individuals as lifelong criminals, resulting in a litany of lost opportunities, including the potential loss of employment, housing, voting rights, professional licensing, and student aid. Join us in calling on all governors to take decisive action and pardon all marijuana convictions, creating a fairer and more equitable future for all Americans.
