Two weeks ago we collected thousands of signatures thanking our essential workers for putting their health on the line by continuing to go to work and keep the gears of our country turning.
But John, we need to do more than just thank them. We need to take action to support them. That’s why I am introducing legislation to give hazard pay to every single one of our essential workers who are out there risking their health by commuting to their place of employment, punching the clock, and performing the services we need to keep our nation going.
If they are going to have our backs, we need to have theirs. That’s why my bill:
- Gives high-risk healthcare workers a hazard pay increase of $18.50 an hour
- Gives non-health related essential workers a hazard pay increase of $13.00 an hour
- Ensures self-employed workers and contractors (including gig workers!) involved in essential work or roles are also eligible
- Extends these benefits through the end of 2020
John -- I think it’s a travesty that some of our lowest paid workers are risking their health to keep this nation going -- especially because many of them are gig workers with little or no health insurance! We have to do right by these workers, which is why I am calling for hazard pay for all essential workers, including contractors and gig workers.
Yours,
Matt
