Beat the Heat: Preventing Heat-Related Illness

Summer is not over yet, there are still plenty of hot days anticipated as we head into August. Here are essential tips to prepare for the heat and prevent heat-related illnesses:

* Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
* Spend time in air-conditioned places, such as public facilities, to cool off. Even a few hours spent in the air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
* Plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, like mornings and evenings.
* Protect your skin with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to avoid sunburn. Sunburns can significantly slow your body's ability to cool down and cause you to be dehydrated.
* Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
* Learn the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and their treatments. Most heat-related illnesses occur because of overexposure to heat or over-exercising.
* Check on individuals at higher risk, including older adults, outdoor workers, children, and people with disabilities.

Look Out Texans - Awareness

Everyone traveling in North Texas, regardless of their destination, has one thing in common: at some point they are a pedestrian. Even if you prefer to drive, you likely have neighbors, friends or family members who depend on a safe walking route for going to work or school, running errands, or getting exercise. Drivers can help keep streets safe in our communities by looking out for people walking along the road and crossing at driveways and intersections.

Unfortunately, the number of fatal crashes between motor vehicle drivers and people bicycling or walking has increased in recent years. Understanding how people should interact together while traveling is more important than ever for improving safety on area roads. To read more, click the button below.
