Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,?

On Wednesday, we gathered at the John A. Wilson Building to honor the life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis. Congressman Lewis was a hero of American democracy and voting rights and a dear friend of Washington, DC. ?

I had the incredible honor of visiting the Edmund Pettus Bridge alongside Congressman Lewis in 2019. He was committed to making sure Americans knew what that bridge and the brutal attack he suffered there meant. By taking that time to tell me about his experiences ? and then later when he came to Black Lives Matter Plaza ? it was obvious to me that he wanted younger people to know that it was our turn.

Congressman Lewis lay?his life, his body, and his freedom on the line so that his people could be free. In his story is the struggle and the battle for voting rights. The brutality he and others faced is because people understood the power of the vote.

mmb

We are grateful that part of the Congressman's legacy was his advocacy for DC statehood. Over 30 years ago, he reminded Congress, ?It is not right that there are still Americans for whom ?one man, one vote? is still a dream.? ?

Despite the challenges our country faces, Congressman Lewis had unwavering faith in our nation and especially in the next generation. He warned us not to get lost in despair. With Congressman Lewis in our hearts, let?s keep pushing forward together.?

Sincerely,?

Muriel Bowsermmgh
