The Week in Review
Happy Friday!
I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 118th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.
Investigating United States Secret Service Failures
Last weekend, a would-be assassin fired several shots at President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. President Trump, fortunately, was not critically injured, but one bullet got close enough to graze his right ear. One attendee, firefighter Corey Compertore, was struck and tragically lost his life protecting his family, while two other attendees, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, were critically injured before the shooter was neutralized. My heart goes out to them and their families during this time.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has subpoenaed Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify next Monday, July 22. We will investigate the failures of the Secret Service and uncover how it failed the no-fail mission. I’ll keep you posted.
Protecting American Elections
Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and I led a letter, cosigned by 60 House and Senate colleagues, to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to inquire about the measures that have been taken by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to safeguard American elections from being hijacked by illegal aliens. Recent events in South Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio related to illegal aliens receiving voter registration information or attempting to register raise serious concerns about the integrity of our federal elections. The House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 8281, the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, which closes loopholes in federal law that may have contributed to these concerning events.
There is no publicly available information to suggest that the Department of Justice is investigating or bringing cases against aliens who violate existing federal election law that prohibits illegal aliens from voting in federal elections.
Our letter requires AG Garland to provide information regarding the steps, if any, taken by the DOJ to prosecute non-citizens for illegally voting or registering to vote in federal elections.
Now more than ever it is imperative to ensure that American citizens can have confidence in the security of our elections.
Upwards of 10 million illegal aliens have been released into our country through our porous borders during Joe Biden’s presidency. Americans should not have to be concerned that their voices will be drowned out by the voices of illegal aliens when electing officials for political offices.
I’m grateful to Senator Hagerty for leading this effort in the Senate and to my colleagues who understand the significance of this oversight.
The letter may be read here.
