Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just filed articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.1
It's about time that someone finally took action. Now we need to have her back.
Thomas and Alito have been mired in one massive ethics scandal after another, taking millions of dollars in undisclosed gifts from billionaires who have business before the Supreme Court, in violation of federal law.2
They also both refused to recuse themselves from cases in which they had blatant conflicts of interest, including cases involving the January 6 attack and criminal immunity for Donald Trump.3
We're mobilizing a huge public outcry to demand a vote on the impeachment of Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito as soon as the House of Representatives is back in session.
The scale of corruption of Justices Thomas and Alito is jaw-dropping — and everyday Americans are paying the price.
For instance, take the Supreme Court decision earlier this year overturning the legal principle known as Chevron deference, which is essential to the ability of federal agencies like the EPA and FDA to protect our air, water, and food safety. Clarence Thomas used to support Chevron, but he flipped his vote after receiving huge amounts of money from wealthy benefactors who wanted Chevron gone.4
Now Americans will live with dirtier air, more polluted water, less safe food and drugs, and more.
A potentially even more dangerous example is their refusal to recuse themselves from cases stemming from the January 6 insurrection and Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Clarence Thomas's wife, Ginni, personally attended the Jan. 6 "Stop the Steal" rally and participated in the scheme to overturn the election. Samuel Alito indicated support for the attack by flying pro-insurrection flags over his homes.5
But they both rejected calls to recuse and together cast key votes in favor of giving the president total criminal immunity for any actions he can claim are within his "official" duties.
Enough is enough. These corrupt justices must go.
