The road to 10 billion

Dear John
Last week, on World Population Day, you saw a ray of hope, from the United Nations. They now expect the world’s population to peak at 10.3 billion in the 2080s. This is lower than the equivalent projection two years ago.
Nonetheless, there is so much to do – years of hard work lie ahead. Many of us will not be here to see world population peak. But there is a way to help, even beyond your lifetime.
Will you leave a legacy to ensure that Population Matters can continue to do its vital work to campaign for a sustainable human population?

Dear John
Today is World Population Day, and the United Nations have just released their new population projections. Released every two years, the report predicts future population changes at a global, national and regional level through to the end of the century.
Here are the headlines:
- We will add another two billion people by 2063
- The world's population will peak at 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s
- It will then gradually decline, dipping below 10 billion by 2100

The good news is, the peak is slightly lower than the last set of projections two years ago. That said, it still represents a significant increase from today's number of 8.1 billion. This means ever more people will find themselves trapped in poverty, suffering the impacts of the climate crisis and unable to access the fundamental building blocks of education and healthcare necessary for sustainable development.
Today's projections show that our work continues to be vital. Thank you, as always, for your support.
Best wishes,
Dominic Nutt
