** Dr. Peter Boylan challenged over his remarks on sharp rise in abortions
------------------------------------------------------------

A number of contributors to The Irish Times’ letters page, including our spokesperson Eilís Mulroy and Dr Angelo Bottone, have challenged abortion campaigner Dr Peter Boylan (pictured above) over his recent claim that there hasn't been a dramatic increase in abortions since the law changed in 2019.

The latest abortion figures released by the Department of Health show that 10,033 abortions occurred in Ireland in 2023, compared to 2,879 Irish abortions in 2018.

Dr Boylan made his claims earlier this week in response to an excellent article by Irish Times' columnist Breda O'Brien, titled: Will Simon Coveney ever be asked about his role in passing the referendum that led to a rise in abortions?

It's really important that people continue to take the time to challenge false and misleading information on the abortion issue wherever it appears. It was good to see the strong push back this week to Dr Boylan's remarks and that people also used the opportunity to inform the public about the truth of what’s actually happening under the current abortion regime.

** Polish parliament rejects pro-abortion bill
------------------------------------------------------------

The lower chamber of Poland’s parliament (the Polish Sejm) has, by a slim margin, rejected a bill to decriminalise abortion.

218 members of parliament opposed the bill, 215 voted in favour, and two members abstained. The result is a wonderful victory for unborn babies and their mothers.

Abortion is currently legal in Poland in cases of sexual assault, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk. If the latest bill had passed, it would have opened the door to wide ranging abortion in Poland.

The new Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his party have vowed to legalise abortion on demand in Poland but the result of the latest vote in parliament has dealt a significant blow to their efforts.

Women in Poland who obtain illegal abortions do not face criminal penalties but doctors who perform illegal abortions or any person who assists in the procurement of an illegal abortion face up to three years in prison.

Proponents of the bill to decriminalise abortion have stated that they intend to keep submitting the bill until it is adopted.

Meanwhile Polish President, Andrzej Duda, publicly expressed his opposition to the pro-abortion push and said if the bill passed in parliament he would refuse to sign it into law.

** Italian Prime Minister backs bill to assist women who choose life
------------------------------------------------------------

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni (pictured above), has proposed a “maternity income” bill that would provide financial support to women who choose life over abortion and qualify for assistance.

The Meloni backed bill would pledge €1,000 each year for five years to any woman who decides against abortion and who faces financial difficulties. The amount would increase with a second child, and would be maintained up to the age of 18 if the child has a disability.

Not surprisingly, Meloni's proposal has been roundly attacked in the usual quarters by those who do not want to see a drop in abortion numbers but instead want to see access to abortion expanded even more.

The Italian Prime Minister deserves a lot of credit for the bold steps she has taken to defend and protect human life.

Given the massive increase in Irish abortions, we have to ensure that more pro-life TDs are elected in the upcoming General Election, to shift the focus away from the promotion of abortion to initiatives focussed on reducing Ireland’s rapidly growing abortion rate.

Eilís Mulroy talks to Aidan Crowley this week about the massive number of unborn lives being ended under the abortion law and why the answer is to elect more pro-life politicians.
