Pledge to do more for people and the planet
|
The changing climate, from the air we breathe to the water we drink, has serious effects on our health. Seven million people die every year from air pollution, while heat waves in American cities cause more deaths than every other disaster combined. And now, as we all face the devastating impacts of coronavirus, those who live in the most polluted areas face more serious infections of the virus.
From people in the U.S. who have lost their livelihoods, to families trying desperately to access medical care in Colombia, and health workers in Indonesia providing care without the supplies they need, it’s clear that climate change and now COVID-19 take the greatest toll on the most vulnerable among us. That’s why our changing climate is a “threat multiplier” — a factor that makes already dangerous situations more fatal.
This Earth Day, you can do more to protect the people most in harm’s way by pledging to follow a few simple steps. We hope you will take the pledge as a starting point to learn more about the connections between health, climate change and pollution.
I hope you and your family are staying safe and well on this Earth Day as we all adjust to the new rhythms of life with coronavirus.
