A weekly wrap of ADL’s reports, updates and analysis on antisemitism around the world.

This Week’s Topline

A Letter from Buenos Aires

ADL Staff in Buenos Aires Commemorate AMIA Bombing Anniversary
ADL stands with Argentine Jewish community at AMIA commemoration.

This week, Jonathan Greenblatt and an ADL delegation arrived in Argentina to join the J7 Task Force Against Antisemitism and other global Jewish leaders in commemorating 30 years since the AMIA Jewish Community Center bombing. This devastating suicide attack, carried out in my hometown by a terrorist proxy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was until 10/7 the largest assault on Jews since the Holocaust. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentina's history, claiming 85 lives and injuring over 300 people.

Iran continues to be the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and antisemitism. Recent events, including the atrocities of October 7 and revelations by the U.S. Director of National Intelligence on Iran’s support for anti-Zionist protests in the United States, highlight the severity and global nature of this ongoing threat. For further insight into the Iranian regime’s long arm of hate in Latin America, please refer to the HispanTV report below.

Amid rising antisemitism, ADL and our partners gathered to learn from each other, including meetings with leaders in Argentina. Responding to requests from Jewish communities in Latin America for educational programs to combat antisemitism, we launched our first-ever Words to Action facilitator training workshop in Buenos Aires. This marks a crucial first step in combating antisemitism in the region through education.

What’s News

GOP, Democratic Party Platforms Feature ADL Recommendations: Ahead of the 2024 Presidential election, both major parties release platforms that state where they stand on key issues. ADL’s national affairs team provided them with our priorities and recommendations as they develop these guiding documents. At our insistence, both Democratic and Republican platforms explicitly recognize antisemitism as a unique form of hate and reiterate support for the Jewish state. You can read ADL’s full platform recommendations here.

Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism: Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, unveiled the Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism. ADL was proud to help shape this first-ever global framework with best practices to counter antisemitism. It was signed by the U.S. and 34 other governments, including every country represented by the J7 Large Communities Task Force Against Antisemitism. ADL is urging all countries around the world to follow suit and endorse the Global Guidelines.

Chart of Number of Antisemitic Tropes Believed

How Do We Reduce Antisemitism?: A new report from the ADL Center for Antisemitism Research has fascinating insights into understanding and countering antisemitism. These new findings include an interactive tool for seeing how different assumptions affect someone’s likelihood of believing in antisemitic tropes (give this tool a try!). Can humor reduce anti-Jewish prejudice in some situations? Can exposure to narrative stories decrease prejudice? Use the interactive tool and read the full report to learn more about effectively addressing hate.

Iranian Regime Promotes Antisemitism in Spanish: A new ADL report provides insights into HispanTV, a Spanish-language media outlet with extensive reach in Latin America that was founded by and is controlled by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s state-controlled media corporation. The broadcaster promotes the Iranian regime’s antisemitic views, Holocaust revisionism, anti-Israel prejudice and incitement. Iran seeks to exert influence in the region, glorify Palestinian terrorism, claim any evidence of Hamas atrocities is propaganda fabricated by Jewish-controlled global media and call for Israel's destruction. Read the report in English or in Spanish.

WEBINAR: Misinformation and Disinformation: What Can You Do?: Join ADL experts on July 25 for a timely webinar on how misinformation and disinformation are proliferating online, along with hate and harassment fueled by the Israel-Hamas War, generative AI and more. You’ll learn more about these issues and what steps you can take to fight them. REGISTER NOW.

Campus Crisis Update

The Repercussions for Student Protesters: After the waves of campus protests, the ripples continue for anti-Israel student protesters who clashed with their school administrations and in some cases with law enforcement. At some schools, talk of disciplinary action has unfortunately not translated into anything that would deter similar protests in the future, including protests that can lead to harassment or even violence against Jewish students. However, in other cases, students are coming to realize that there may be consequences, whether academic penalties by the schools, or concerns from companies that may be wary of hiring disruptive or biased employees.

Hearings About Campus Protests Shift to State Level: After U.S. House hearings earlier this year drew attention to the ways that leaders of high-profile universities responded to pro-Palestinian protests on campus and concerns about the well-being of Jewish students who in many cases felt unsafe at their own schools, several state legislatures are also getting involved, looking into the actions of schools based in their states. These hearings are an important step, and we urge elected officials to use every lever to help ensure universities take serious steps to improve the campus climate.

Take Action Today

Make your voice heard! Join the fight against antisemitism and urge Congress to support the historic Countering Antisemitism Act (CAA). The CAA would lock in the policies of the National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism for the long haul. There are two key Senators that have the ability to fast-track this urgent legislation, Senator Durbin, the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Minority Leader McConnell. Your support is vital, so please send them a note today.
